The 2014 National Living Conditions Survey (ENCV) indicates that Quiché is the second department of Guatemala most affected by poverty, with an index of 41%. In the indigenous population of this department, the poverty rate rises to 90.6%. In addition, the department has the lowest human development index in the country.
The population of the municipalities of Santo Tomás Chichicastenango and San Pedro Jocopilas has a very high Vulnerability Index to Food and Nutrition Insecurity and a high rate of occupational precariousness. Agriculture faces several problems (prolonged freezing and droughts, deficit of basic grains ...) and the impact that this situation has in childhood is clear: in the zone an average of chronic malnutrition of 63.9% prevails.
The Situational Analysis in the Rights of the Child (ASDN) of Educo points out that child malnutrition is a determining factor for the education of children and not only affects in early childhood, but throughout the school years. For this reason, Educo seeks to strengthen the food security of the population and the rural development of indigenous and peasant families in two municipalities of Quiché: Santo Tomás Chichicastenango and San Pedro Jocopilas.
