Description

The ratio of surgeons stands at 1 per 277,819; the ratio of obstetricians is 1 per 659,583 people and the ratio of anesthetists is 1 per 2,203,600 inhabitants, which are also concentrated in hospitals of the largest cities. Given the impossibility of accessing specialized services in rural areas, many patients are forced to travel to the capital, which generates endless waiting lists in hospital records. Meanwhile, the illnesses make life difficult for patients, who have to live with obstetric fistulas, urological problems, congenital disabilities, leprosy or cleft lip, and the consequences that they entail (discrimination, stigma, poverty, etc.).

The project will strengthen the capacities of 1 regional public hospital to enable it to provide specialized health care services to its reference population. To this end, a group of Ethiopian surgeons and specialists from the capital will volunteer to train their peer health professionals in the regional hospital. They will deliver practical sessions of clinical and surgical case interventions ("outreach missions") to their colleagues so that in the future they will be able to respond and offer themselves better-specialized health care services to their patients.

Project objectives

Improve the access and quality of specialized health services for the most vulnerable population of Ethiopia in the peripheral and rural regions, through the training of health personnel and specialized surgery campaigns.

Activities

  • Practical training sessions at a regional hospital. Among the mobilized medical specialists there will be general surgeons, plastics, orthopaedists, anesthetists, internists, radiologists, ophthalmologists and instrumentalist nurses.
  • Perform specialized medical consultations, surgical interventions, and personal training through real clinical cases and teaching of surgical techniques.

Who will benefit?

8 health professionals will be trained.

87 patients will receive specialized consultations and 45 patients will undergo surgery: women with obstetric fistula, children with deformities from burns or accidents that cause disabilities, children with Cleft lip and cleft palate, patients with advanced leprosy status and the elderly with urological problems.
