The European Commission give funds to Worldcoo’s innovation project

Horizon 2020 is the biggest European Commission Research and Innovation program ever. From 2014 to 2020, this program contributes to addressing key social challenges, promoting industrial leaderships in Europe and strengthening excellence in science. The total budget for such initiatives will amount to nearly 80.000 million of euros.

As part of the Horizon 2020, SME Instrument program is designated with 3.000 million of euros to boost breakthrough innovations by funding highly innovative SMEs with a clear commercial ambition and potential for high growth and internationalization.

innovation

Aspiring recipients of SME Instrument funds must be based on an innovative idea. This idea has to be groundbreaking in their sector or market and must primarily perform innovation activities. The process of filing is based on three phases:

  • Phase 1. Concept & Feasibility Assessment
  • Phase 2. Demonstration, Market Replication, R&D
  • Phase 3. Commercialization

Achieving this funding is highly competitive and companies must meet the highest expectations required. It is necessary to demonstrate talent, differentiation and probabilities of success.

This year, the European Commission received 960 project proposals from 13 countries considered Phase 2. Italian SMEs were the most successful with 10 beneficiaries who will receive € 12.7 million in total, closely followed by 9 Spanish SMEs who will share € 13.5 million.

Research of rare diseases in the Biobank of Institute of Research Vall d’Hebron

The Primary Immune Deficiencies (PIDD) are the group of rare diseases caused by the quantitative alteration and/or functional alteration of different mechanisms involved in the immunological response of the patient. The patients with PIDD are susceptible to suffer infections that, if not treated properly, can be lethal or leave sequels that would worsen their quality of life.

The PIDD occur in more than 1 in 2.000 live births. The most severe form of PID, the group of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) is found in 1 of every 50.000 live births. These children are called “Bubble children”. Children with SCID cannot be exposed to our environment without the risk of dying from infection. For this reason, when the immunodeficiency is detected, the child is kept in a sterile and protected environment, hence the name “Bubble Children”.

The Foundation of the University Hospital Vall d’Hebron – Research Institute (VHIR) has created the Biobank to collect and preserve blood samples from patients with rare diseases caused by PIDD in order to improve the identification techniques and for characterization of mutations of patients.

The Biobank of Immunology from the Research Institute of Vall d’Hebron consists in a collection on blood samples from pediatric patients with PIDD.

rare-diseases

With this new project, Nicequest give the option to its users to change their points for donations to help the scientific community to research on rare diseases that nowadays are very difficult to diagnose. With 7.000€ the following aims will be made:

  • Optimize the diagnosis and offer genetic counselling to the closest relatives.
  • Reach a definitive diagnosis offering a new opportunity for treatment, due to the possibility of case revision.
  • Encourage collaborative research together with other research centres, nationally and internationally.

Thanks to the solidarity of the Nicequest users and thanks to Biobank of Immunology the correct availability of samples of PIDDs will be ensured in case it is requested by other centers and also the collaborative investigation will be encouraged because there are different kinds of PIDDs that are not very frequently and it is necessary to study patients from worldwide to diagnose these rare diseases.

With this project the research and the discoveries about the diagnosis and cure of rare diseases will be expanded. This project will help all those people suffering from primary immunodeficiency, now and in the future.

No child without a meal during Christmas: report of funding of the project

Today we are presenting the report of funding and monitoring of the project No child without a meal at Christmas in which PcComponentes collaborated with Aldeas infantiles SOS.

At the beginning of December 2014 we informed you that Pc Componentes joined with Worldcoo and it became a one of our e-commerce with a cause. Its new project had the aim to guarantee a balanced and healthy feeding to children who were living in a vulnerability situation in Spain.

If we make a comparison between the situation of vulnerability in children one year ago and the situation of vulnerability in children now, we realize that the situation hasn’t improved. One of ten children in Spain live under the poverty line and, sadly, this situation can become chronic unless measures are taken.

To help improve the situation of many Spanish children, Aldeas Infantiles SOS launched the Project Children’s Dining Halls in its day centers and it launched a School Lunchroom Program to contribute children of families at risk can eat during Christmas and prevent children from suffering by the insecurity caused by the economic difficulties of their environment.

One of the commitments from Worldcoo is to monitor the funded projects and track every € donated by the users of our e-commerce with a cause.

The customers of Pc Componentes were making their donations every time they make a purchase and, in 50 days, they donated 10.770€ that has been distributed in:

–          School Lunchroom Program of Aldeas Infantiles SOS: 92 children from Madrid, Barcelona and Toledo schools have benefited from the program.

–          Day Centers of Aldeas Infantiles SOS: 3.630€ have been allocated to help to obtain a healthy food to children that go to day centers in Canarias, Madrid and Zaragoza.

In the next picture you can see it all closer:

Giving Tuesday: the day dedicated to solidarity has come

Many of you have heard about Black Friday or Cyber Monday, two days in which actual stores or stores online give high discounts because of this time marks the beginning of Christmas shopping. Today we are going to talk about Giving Tuesday, a movement that was created in 2012 as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season (Black Friday and Cyber Monday).

Giving Tuesday is a global movement that wants to encourage and multiply the good deeds of people. The aim of this movement is to spend one day of celebrating the solidarity of the people in all the world. With the hashtag #GivingTuesday we want to encourage people to make a donation like food, money, time (be a volunteer) or giving lightly used objects.

To celebrate Giving Tuesday, you can collaborate with an existing project by giving a donation, you can create your own fundraising campaign or you can propose a cause for this global day. In the official webpage of #GivingTuesday you can find different ideas for this day, different solidarity initiatives and the different projects that have been created for this date.

Giving Tuesday

As a committed company, we want to collaborate with Giving Tuesday global movement and we are going to make different actions:

First of all, we have designed our “Giving Tuesday Widget”. On December 1st this widget will appear in all of our e-commerce with a cause like Dreivip, Uvinum, Mequedouno or Promofarma, to promote the donations on this day.

At the moment, some of our e-commerce of a cause have confirmed that they will join the #GivingTuesday movement. These e-commerce are Dreivip, Mequedouno, Uvinum, Promofarma and LetsBonus.

Finally, coincidentally with the Day of Giving Tuesday, we launch our Christmas Campaign. This campaign consists in the draw of a “Solidarity basket” filled with donated products by our e-commerce of a cause. To participate in the draw, you have only to pay 2, 5 or 10€ that will go entirely to the project “Personalitats” of the NGO Pallapupas. Worldcoo also will make a donation to make the project possible. The days before December 1st, we will write a post about our Christmas campaign.

Like us and our e-commerce with a cause, join with GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that will take place this year on December 1st.

Education against childhood poverty in Spain

Spain has the second highest percentage of childhood poverty out of all of Europe.  Nowadays, one of three Spanish children live at risk of poverty or social exclusion. In the last five years, the investment in childhood has been reduced by almost 15% and this fact makes it ever more difficult to come out of this situation.

The NGO Save the Children attends to more than 5.000 Spanish children daily. They provide to the children the opportunity to have a better future so they may leave of the circle of poverty in which they are now in. Thanks to the coordination between Save the Children, Social Services and schools, they identify children that could be at risk of poverty and they talk with their parents in order to make them form part of their comprehensive care program.

For Save the Children, education is the main road for children will be able to leave from the situation of poverty and social exclusion. For this reason, Save the Children support difficulties that the child may have to reduce school absenteeism, promote the education through the values, healthy habits and in the educational games and comprehensive work with the families through the family psychosocial support to solve the emotional conflicts with their child. At the same time, they give help to their feeding, school supplies, glasses… according to the needs of each child.

pobreza-infantil

This Christmas, Lets Bonus has prepared a #SolidarityPlanLB with the aim to support children living at risk of poverty or at risk of social exclusion to get, through the educational success, children lift themselves out of the situation of poverty or social exclusion in which they are.

The customers of Lets Bonus will be able to collaborate with the program of fight against childhood poverty of Save the Children through the following ways:

  • With 2€ a child will have an educational toy.
  • With 5 € a child will be provided with a school kit to develop activities throughout the school year (cardboard, paper, pencils, etc.).
  • With 10 € a child with learning difficulties will receive special attention for one month.

If you also think that children should have to have the same opportunities, whatever their economic situation is, join the fight against childhood poverty and collaborate with this project.

Help and protection to unaccompanied children refugees

Five years ago, as a result of factors like corruption, injustice, inequality, human rights violations and poverty a war began in Syria. This war has caused one of the worst refugee crisis of the century.

Since the beginning on the war, thousands of families have fled searching for a decent living environment, while other families have stayed in the country. According to Aldeas Infantiles SOS, it is been estimated that there are 7.6 million Syrians that have been internally displaced and nearly 4 million of people have been displaced or are displaced by neighboring countries.

Unfortunately, the main victims of the war are the children. Many children have only knew the war, other have had to leave the school and the woman can’t give birth in hospitals because they are destroyed or they have no medical staff. Worst of all, are the thousands of violations, abuses and child exploitation that many children have suffered because they have remained alone and have no protection.

From the beginning of the Syrian conflict, Aldeas Infantiles SOS has worked to give their help to families and children that are in Syria or that have been displaced to some of the countries where Aldeas Infantiles SOS are present. But they not only are giving response to urgent needs, they are also helping unaccompanied children to be reunited with their families.

protección niños refugiados

Our e-commerce with a cause Pc Componentes also wants to give a protection to unaccompanied children refugees, young mothers and mothers with young children with malnutrition. For that reason, Pc Componentes is offering its customers the possibility to donate 1 euro in their purchases in order to help Aldeas Infantiles to protect these children from the effects of the war and displacement.

Thanks to the solidarity of Pc Componentes customers, 200 refugees, especially unaccompanied children, young mothers, mothers with children (especially malnourished children under 5 years) and pregnant women will receive an emergency kit valued at 20€. This kit contains food and basic products as a clothes, hygiene products and specific equipment needed to meet refugee’s needs.

“I wish that all children that can’t be with their families are with Aldeas Infantiles SOS” – mother of a foster child that have been in a Temporal attention center of Aldeas Infantiles SOS in Damascus and now he is with his family.

Omar, the Syrian child that smiles again

Today we are going to explain a story about Omar, a Syrian child of 8 years old that has a body like a 5 years child that, thanks to all the people that have made a donation to UNHCR to help Syrian refugees, smiles again.

Over 2 years ago, while Omar was playing with his sisters in the street a rocket reached their home in Syria. From there and from the moment in which someone killed his uncle, Omar and his family fled to Lebanon searching a better life.

omar vuelve a sonreir

As we have said before, Omar is 8 years old but his body is like a body of a child of 5 years. That’s because he was born with a rare growth-hormone deficiency that causes him different disorders in his physical development. In Syria, Omar received a treatment for grow but since he is living in Lebanon his family haven’t been able to afford the treatment.

Omar can’t grow without continuous hormone and vitamin treatment, but his parents try to give him healthy food to help him. According to them, Omar needs a treatment of 4 or 5 years to reach puberty.

Before this situation, at the end of June, UNHCR suggested that his case was studied to carry him and his family to a European country where Omar could have access to the treatment he needs and he could fulfill his dream: “be as high as the ceiling”.

Today we are glad to announce that thanks to all the people that have made a donation to the projects for refugees or have made a direct donation to UNHCR, Omar smiles again because he will be able to travel to Finland to continue with his treatment.

“My family and I will be leaving, so I get treatment” –Omar says.

For parents of Omar, this lack of treatment is what most affects them, it killed and destroyed them. It sets them back years and lose all the things they had gotten.

familia de omar

“And you know how children hit me now? First, I will grow up. Second, when I am big, I will defend myself” – Omar explains to UNHCR people.

UNHCR has explained all the story of Omar and his family in two videos. You can see the videos in the following links:

With examples like Omar, you can see that the impact of your donations is awesome. For this reason, we encourage you to continue making your donations every time you make a purchase online as there are many people who still need your help to improve their situation.
