No child without a meal during Christmas: report of funding of the project

Today we are presenting the report of funding and monitoring of the project No child without a meal at Christmas in which PcComponentes collaborated with Aldeas infantiles SOS.

At the beginning of December 2014 we informed you that Pc Componentes joined with Worldcoo and it became a one of our e-commerce with a cause. Its new project had the aim to guarantee a balanced and healthy feeding to children who were living in a vulnerability situation in Spain.

If we make a comparison between the situation of vulnerability in children one year ago and the situation of vulnerability in children now, we realize that the situation hasn’t improved. One of ten children in Spain live under the poverty line and, sadly, this situation can become chronic unless measures are taken.

To help improve the situation of many Spanish children, Aldeas Infantiles SOS launched the Project Children’s Dining Halls in its day centers and it launched a School Lunchroom Program to contribute children of families at risk can eat during Christmas and prevent children from suffering by the insecurity caused by the economic difficulties of their environment.

One of the commitments from Worldcoo is to monitor the funded projects and track every € donated by the users of our e-commerce with a cause.

The customers of Pc Componentes were making their donations every time they make a purchase and, in 50 days, they donated 10.770€ that has been distributed in:

–          School Lunchroom Program of Aldeas Infantiles SOS: 92 children from Madrid, Barcelona and Toledo schools have benefited from the program.

–          Day Centers of Aldeas Infantiles SOS: 3.630€ have been allocated to help to obtain a healthy food to children that go to day centers in Canarias, Madrid and Zaragoza.

In the next picture you can see it all closer:

Thanks to all people who helped make this project has been made possible and we take this opportunity to encourage you to continue helping to create a high social impact.

Giving Tuesday: the day dedicated to solidarity has come

Many of you have heard about Black Friday or Cyber Monday, two days in which actual stores or stores online give high discounts because of this time marks the beginning of Christmas shopping. Today we are going to talk about Giving Tuesday, a movement that was created in 2012 as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season (Black Friday and Cyber Monday).

Giving Tuesday is a global movement that wants to encourage and multiply the good deeds of people. The aim of this movement is to spend one day of celebrating the solidarity of the people in all the world. With the hashtag #GivingTuesday we want to encourage people to make a donation like food, money, time (be a volunteer) or giving lightly used objects.

To celebrate Giving Tuesday, you can collaborate with an existing project by giving a donation, you can create your own fundraising campaign or you can propose a cause for this global day. In the official webpage of #GivingTuesday you can find different ideas for this day, different solidarity initiatives and the different projects that have been created for this date.

Giving Tuesday

As a committed company, we want to collaborate with Giving Tuesday global movement and we are going to make different actions:

First of all, we have designed our “Giving Tuesday Widget”. On December 1st this widget will appear in all of our e-commerce with a cause like Dreivip, Uvinum, Mequedouno or Promofarma, to promote the donations on this day.

At the moment, some of our e-commerce of a cause have confirmed that they will join the #GivingTuesday movement. These e-commerce are Dreivip, Mequedouno, Uvinum, Promofarma and LetsBonus.

Finally, coincidentally with the Day of Giving Tuesday, we launch our Christmas Campaign. This campaign consists in the draw of a “Solidarity basket” filled with donated products by our e-commerce of a cause. To participate in the draw, you have only to pay 2, 5 or 10€ that will go entirely to the project “Personalitats” of the NGO Pallapupas. Worldcoo also will make a donation to make the project possible. The days before December 1st, we will write a post about our Christmas campaign.

Like us and our e-commerce with a cause, join with GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that will take place this year on December 1st.

Omar, the Syrian child that smiles again

Today we are going to explain a story about Omar, a Syrian child of 8 years old that has a body like a 5 years child that, thanks to all the people that have made a donation to UNHCR to help Syrian refugees, smiles again.

Over 2 years ago, while Omar was playing with his sisters in the street a rocket reached their home in Syria. From there and from the moment in which someone killed his uncle, Omar and his family fled to Lebanon searching a better life.

omar vuelve a sonreir

As we have said before, Omar is 8 years old but his body is like a body of a child of 5 years. That’s because he was born with a rare growth-hormone deficiency that causes him different disorders in his physical development. In Syria, Omar received a treatment for grow but since he is living in Lebanon his family haven’t been able to afford the treatment.

Omar can’t grow without continuous hormone and vitamin treatment, but his parents try to give him healthy food to help him. According to them, Omar needs a treatment of 4 or 5 years to reach puberty.

Before this situation, at the end of June, UNHCR suggested that his case was studied to carry him and his family to a European country where Omar could have access to the treatment he needs and he could fulfill his dream: “be as high as the ceiling”.

Today we are glad to announce that thanks to all the people that have made a donation to the projects for refugees or have made a direct donation to UNHCR, Omar smiles again because he will be able to travel to Finland to continue with his treatment.

“My family and I will be leaving, so I get treatment” –Omar says.

For parents of Omar, this lack of treatment is what most affects them, it killed and destroyed them. It sets them back years and lose all the things they had gotten.

familia de omar

“And you know how children hit me now? First, I will grow up. Second, when I am big, I will defend myself” – Omar explains to UNHCR people.

UNHCR has explained all the story of Omar and his family in two videos. You can see the videos in the following links:

With examples like Omar, you can see that the impact of your donations is awesome. For this reason, we encourage you to continue making your donations every time you make a purchase online as there are many people who still need your help to improve their situation.

SIGEF Projects Awards 2015

This weekend we have posted different images in Twitter and Facebook about our participation in SIGEF Projects Awards. Today in our blog we are talking about all the things that we did during this three days.

SIGEF is an annual international event that gathers non-profit organizations, renowned speakers, social entrepreneurs and the general public. For three days we have been able to attend plenary sessions, make networking related with the social change, the NGOs have been able to be disclosed and social entrepreneurs have been able to explain their projects through their participation in SIGEF Projects Awards.

SIGEF Projects Awards are an awards that take into account the following values in the projects:

  • Originality and relevance of the project
  • Global reach / applicability
  • Positive impact for society
  • Facilitate and create links between citizens
  • Bring positive consciousness about key topics for sustainability
  • Innovative

The selection process was in three phases. On the first one, the participants had to post their project in Horyou, the social network for people and organizations concerned about social good. The jury chose 50 from all presented projects and the selected ones were exposed on Friday or on Saturday at SIGEF and then, the jury chose 10 finalist projects.

In our case, we explain our project on Saturday. On Friday we attend to conferences about social entrepreneurship, gender equality through financial empowerment and we met new initiatives with a social purpose in their business modelWe also met other interesting projects that were participating in the awards and we also met NGOs.

On Saturday, we talked about what is Worldcoo and how our widget could help to the companies and to the society and the social impact that our widget had generated until the date. Unfortunately, at the ending of the day the jury informed us that we weren’t one of the 10 selected projects.

Finally, on Sunday we attended very interesting conferences about youth that worries for social change and we listened different experiences about people that use the culture and the art to generate changes in the society.

To summarize the experience we have lived this weekend, we only want to say that it has been very gratifying explain in SIGEF what is Worldcoo and what we do because there were many people that worries about how to improve the problems in the world and they could meet us and could know how we have helped to improve the situation of many people. We also met people with big values that had made very interesting project and we wish them best of luck for the future and, finally, we could visit an amazing city full of beauty in every corner. We recommend it to 100%.

For finish, congratulations to the three winners of the SIGEF Project Awards: Human Relais, Lensational y Kmerpad and thanks to Horyou for give us the opportunity to attend at SIGEF 2015.

Generate solutions for the problems in the world

A few months ago we gave you good news about Worldcoo: we were officially a Certified B Corporation and we explained to you how much it meant for us. Today we are talking about what it means to be a B Corp company.

Perhaps you don’t know what it means to have this certification, don’t worry about it in the following sentences we will tell you the definition. According to B corporation website, “B corp is the first certification of a company that guarantees the organizational sustainability and allows the company to comply voluntarily with high social and environmental standards as well as comply with transparency commitments and corporate responsibility.

It seems easy but it isn’t. B corp companies have to have a continuous improvement process to generate positive impact for the society and for the environment. The company has to take into account that it always has to fulfill the following requirements and commitments:

1.       Commitment of purpose: the companies have to have a business model focused in order to create a positive impact in the society and environment.

2.       Commitment of responsibility: the company must protect the interest of the workers, environment and the community.

3.       Commitment of transparency:  the companies with Certified B Corporation have to publish an annual report about their social and environmental impact. This report must be comprehensive and transparent and it must be certified by an external and independent organism.

generate solutions for the world

Many citizens of the world are conscious about social and environmental problems that exists in the world and all want to be a part of the solution of these problems. We not only want to pay our bills and satisfy our basic needs, we also want to have integrity and we want to feel our lives are meaningful.

Best of all is that to create the solutions for the problems there are in the world, we don’t need heroes, we must change the way to we make many things. For instance, in 2011 when the Spanish government approved the new law about smoking many people thought that it was a madness but nowadays we have changed our habits and now it would be rare to see someone smoking, for example, in a restaurant. Changing our habits can generate solutions for many of the problems that exists in the world today.

If citizens can change their habits, companies can also change their habits. Many companies will think like many citizens, they will think that it is a madness and that they will not receive anything, but what these companies don’t know is that their success is in to make everybody be able to live better.

If you are a person or company and you had doubts about B Corp movement, we hope that this post helps you and remember BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.

European Lung Cancer Week

The European Lung Cancer Week take place from 10th to 17th September for to raise awareness of the bad habits that may lead this disease, the symptoms presented by the patients and the serious consequences that entails living with the disease.

Lung Cancer is one of the most frequent cancers in the world and it has the highest mortality rate. Globally, an estimated that 1,9 million of people will have new cancer case in the year 2015 and, in Spain, this amount will be 28.300 new cases.

The main cause of this disease are both active and passive smoking, but other factors associated with lifestyle are also influential, for example, not have a balanced diet.

Smoking causes between 85% and 90% of lung cancers

Nowadays, there are not specific symptoms that indicate someone have lung cancer. For that reason, the doctors diagnose this disease when it is in advanced state and its symptoms oblige patients to visit the doctor.

The most frequent symptoms are:

–          Coughing: is the most frequent symptom.

–          Coughing up blood.

–          Dyspnea.

–          Chest pain and shortness of breath.

Lung Cancer, depending on its localization, may affect other areas of the body and this can lead to other symptoms, for example, headache o backache. Is important to know that all of these symptoms can be related with other diseases but we recommend to visit the doctor when it appears.

European Lung Cancer Week

Regarding the treatment, it is essential knowing what kind of lung cancer the patient have and which extension he has. Also is important knowing the age and the state of health of the patient. There are four basic lung cancer treatments: surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy.

Most people with this kind of cancer receive more than one type of treatment, unfortunately, often this is useless because, as we said before, the cancer has been detected in an advanced situation.

For that reason, the best prevention for this kind of disease is giving up smoking, trying not to be exposed to their smoke or minerals lung carcinogens and having a lifestyle with balanced diet and constant physical exercise.

We must all be aware of the seriousness of the disease and how we can avoid it before it is too late.
