Fighting child malnutrition in Kenya

cabecera_uvinum_aztivate

Uvinum is one of the multiple companies who collaborates with us with a strongest commitment against child malnutrition. Some days ago, euro to euro, all their customers collected the total amount necessary to ensure the distribution of a daily meal to 60 children in Madagascar trough the collaboration with Yamuna.

aztivateNow, they have just started a new challenge. In collaboration with Aztivate, an NGO who works for cooperation and development in Africa, the customers of Uvinum will make that 340 children from Turkana (Kenya) receive Vitamin A, antiparasitic and multivitamin annual treatment.

As you may know, Kenya is experiencing one of the worst crises since 2011 due to the lack of rain that triggers serious health problems. Children and pregnant women urgently need medical and food assistance. In particular, the population of Turkana, a region located in northern Kenya, has levels of malnutrition of the 30% and the forecast is that the situation will worsen due to the lack of rainfall. Aztivate has been working in the region for two years, fighting child malnutrition. Uvinum community will have the opportunity to do the same now.

Uvinum against child malnutrition

Yamuna 04

yamuna-781The NGO Yamuna works with the objective of improving the living conditions and the future expectations of the marginal children population. In Madagascar, the NGO’s Mandrosoa Educational Center welcomes children who live in very precarious situations and can’t count on the support of their family. In the center they also offer a dining service to guarantee that children have, at least, one meal a day and fight against child malnutrition in the country.

355After raising the amount needed to operate 40 children in India and reduce new leprosy cases (you can remember HERE), Uvinum users will now help the NGO Yamuna to make it possible to distribute new daily menus and ensure adequate nutrition and combat child malnutrition.

Through their help, 50 children in Madagascar  will be guaranteed one meal a day at school.

Miquel and Mireia visit the NGO S.A.U.C.E in Cambodia

capcelera_ENG

“Education in Battamang is the best motivation and recognition for people with difficulties”.

alumnosOne month ago, Mireia and Miquel started a new adventure in which they will visit so many countries in which our ecommerce with a cause have funded some project in order to improve the social and environmental situations.

Their first stop has been in Cambodia, where they have had the opportunity to visit the NGO S.A.U.C.E, an entity that was born in 2001 in order to help people at risk of social exclusion in Cambodia, one country that still today is victim of the sequels of a genocide in which two million people died.

Among the most affected are children, who still today face problems such as malnutrition, abuse, exploitation, anti-personnel mines or difficulties in accessing school, especially in rural areas.  In front of this situation, the education is considered a key aspect for the country and this is one of the S.A.U.C.E priorities.

In this post, we talk with Miquel and Mireia about their experience in Battambgang, where the Foundation is located.

Miquel, Mireia, how would you describe the area where S.A.U.C.E is located?

The Apostolic Prefecture of Battambang is the organization with which S.A.U.C.E collaborates. Battambang is a good reflection of Cambodia, a mostly rural country with an economy based on agriculture and very young population; who almost don’t have access to education and are dedicated to work in the field.

This situation is a legacy of one of the most important genocides of humanity that struck Cambodia between 1975 and 1979 and the war that occurred just after that. This genocide became fierce with the country’s intellectuals, killing, in the case of education, up to 80% of teachers and in the case of health, only left five physicians alive throughout the country. This situation paralyzed almost all country and the education hasn’t recovered yet.

The Prefecture concentrates its efforts on education and on disabled persons, and its scope is remote and very isolated rural areas.

What was your first impression when you arrive there?

Our first impression when we arrive at the Prefecture was grandiosity, because of the dimension of the enclosure and the serenity for the peace that there was in the atmosphere.  Apart from the church and the house of the parish priests, there’s a medical center, a guest house, a house for the volunteers, two shelters, a day care center and the Karuna Computer Center.

During the day, all the movement of the kids, workers and volunteers was constant; everyone had a clear objective.  There is nothing more motivating than knowing the goal, the reason of your day to day. This was our first and last impression of Battambang Prefecture.

How would you describe people who lives in Battambang?

Most of people who there are dedicated to agriculture, with almost no education. Population lives in remote areas near the fields.

There is also a very large group of people with physical disabilities. Throughout the above-mentioned conflict along with the aftermath of the Vietnam War, there was a widespread outbreak of polio and many mutilations by anti-personnel mines, one of the leading causes of death in the country still to this day.

Among other projects, you have visited the educational “Karuna Computer Center”, where people have education about computer and technology. How are them?

The main aim of the Karuna Computer Center is facilitate the education to people with different ages who live in remote areas and with difficult access to school, and kid with physical disabilities. Because of that, classes are done in the evenings, so people can combine school with work.

In addition to computer training, in the center there are also three classrooms for English training and the repair of computer equipment.

Why is so important promote and boost their education?

First of all, education is a basic tool to access to labor world. However, it is also a good source of motivation and recognition for those with more difficulties.

Apart of this, what kind of other project have you visited?

The Prefecture works on 4 major pillars in which it divides multiple projects:

  • Education, which includes the construction and support of schools in remote areas or support to the most disadvantaged families.
  • Care for the group of people with disabilities.
  • Shelters for children who are vulnerable or disabled.
  • Social enterprises in which people with difficulties are employed and trained for future integration into the labor market.

From here, thousands of miles away, what do you think we could do to contribute our bit?

Obviously, one of the most important legs to continue the work, is the collection and the economic support. However, we believe that there are other forms also important to contribute as the work of communication and dissemination. In this way, it is made known the reality of other places in the world and allows to generate greater awareness.

PC Componentes fights against child cancer

CRIS - Antonio Perez Maria
 “An investment for the life”
In Spain, every year, 1.400 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in children.

logo_CRIS

In front of this frightening figure, there are entities, such as Fundación CRIS Cáncer, which promote and finance research and innovation projects for the treatment and cure of the disease.

This is the case of “Project Gabi”. Gabi was a 13-year-old girl who, after undergoing several standard treatments, couldn’t eradicate her disease. Their parents decided to trust Dr. Antonio Pérez in order to start a new treatment, new in Spain, which consists of transferring to patients large amounts of Natural Killer (NK) cells and memory T cells, which are cells of the immune system specialized in destroying dangerous cells, such as tumor cells. Thanks to this new treatment, Gabi could live two more years.

Since then, the Hospital de la Paz, in Madrid, began to investigate in this type of cellular therapies that can be a very important step for the cure of this disease.

PcComponentes has joined this cause in order to CRIS Cancer could carry out this new clinical trial and enable such treatment to other patients that today have no cure. It is, as Gabi’s mother says, “an investment for the life”.

Through the amount raised, CRIS Cancer will be able to  treat children with leukemia and other solid childhood tumors that don’t respond to conventional or relapsing treatments. Although it is at a very early stage, clinical trials like this raise expectations about the prevention and cure of this disease are very high, but for this, economic investments are needed.

The project will be carried out at the Hospital de la Paz in Madrid, in collaboration with other hospitals and research centers.

More than 110.0000€ have gone to addressing the needs of refugees crossing the Mediterranean or fleeing from conflicts in Africa and people who have suffered the consequences of natural disasters, like those in Ecuador and Haiti, this means a growth in donations of 190%.

Education projects, the second on the list, have focused on ensuring education for children, young people and women in conflict zones in Asia and Africa. Unlike the previous year, the healthcare projects focused mainly on research and care for sick children in Spain, receiving 334% more donations. On the other hand, most of the food projects went to fighting childhood malnourishment in Africa, mainly, and to helping at-risk families in Spain.

These are our main results of 2016, a year in which we have achieved a capital increase of 2.3 million euros from European and private funds. Moreover, in 2016 we have launched a new raising channel that allows customers and employees of big corporations, to make donations and it has consolidated in the online banking sector. And to begin with, the company debuts with a project led by the NGO Street Child. In particular, they have the challenge of raising funds to build a basic rural school and training a teacher to facilitate access to education for three years to 200 children in Sierra Leone, where it is estimated that there are currently more than 230,000 children of primary school age without schooling.

As we mentioned, the non-profit organization behind this project is Street Child, whose mission is to promote access to quality education for those children who don’t go to school, many of whom live on the streets, both in urban and rural areas.

International Day of the Girl

Today, October 11th, we join the celebration of the International Day of the Girl, a day to claim gender equality, women’s Access to their universal right and eliminate discrimination and violence against women. According to ONU Women, it is estimated that 35% of women worldwide   suffer violence and every day more than 39.000 girls are forced to get married and leave school

because-im-a-girlLuckily, there are thousands of initiatives that help to eradicate this situation. One of them is the one we launched in the context of this day with Nicequest.Because I’m a Girl” is the name of the campaign led by the NGO Plan International, founded with the aim of achieve gender equality and their empowerment through education.

We want to achieve that 140 girls affected by the conflict in Southern Sudan, -most of them teenagers with kids between 12 and 18 years old- have access to alternative quality education in a safe and socially cohesive environment.

Through the participation of the users of Nicequest, these girls will able to do a course of accelerated learning and facilitate their stay through the distribution of different hygiene kits and taking care of their children in a nearby nursery. You can follow the project HERE.

Moreover, in the context of this day, Plan International has presented “Counting the invisible girls”, “a report that, according to the NGO, “explores the current state of gender data and exposes the gaps: we don’t count how many girls leave school because of early marriage, pregnancy or violence, exactly how many give birth before they turn 15, how many hours a day they spend working, what kind of work they do and whether they get paid for it”.

From here, we encourage you to join this day and help us to ensure girls everywhere can learn, lead, decide and thrive.

The schooling of 120 kids in Tuum (Kenia)

Tuum is a small village located at approximately 500 km north from Nairobi. It is an isolated place, arid and of difficult access. The minimum services of health and education are not available to the population. There is only one public primary school and the kindergarten has opened its doors to children under 6 who, before that, wandered around the fields carelessly.

Thanks of the collaboration of more than 800 users of Zacaris, the NGO Active Africa has achieved the schooling of 120 kids (from 3 to 5 years old) from Samburu and Turkana tribes.

Here the complete report!

For the education of 140 girls

capclaera_plan

#NewProject

because-im-a-girlOctober 11 is the International Day of the Girl Child; in this context, Nicequest users join the global campaign “Because I am a Girl”, initiative that Plan International launches with the aim of achieve equality for girls and their empowerment through their right to education.

In South Sudan, only a small part of primary school children attend school, and in the case of girls, the number is further reduced by the fact that is traditionally conceived that girls have to marry and have children at an earlier age, so the education is not the priority.

logo_planThis situation is what has led to Plan International to develop an Accelerated Learning Program at private government schools to promote access to schooling for teenagers with kids and girls who are between 12 and 18 years old. That program is aimed to promote education and facilitate the retention of girls in this courses through different initiatives, such as the distribution of hygiene kits among attendees or caring for children in a nursery near the school.

Through the participation of the users of Nicequest, we will be able to help 140 girls to have access to alternative quality education in a safe and socially cohesive environment.
