capcelera_uvinum

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the third poorest country in the world; life expectancy doesn’t reach 50 years and children mortality sands at 19%. In addition, primary education is not free, so that less than 40% of children between 6 and 11 years can go to school.

As you may know, Kenya is experiencing one of the worst crises since 2011 due to the lack of rain that triggers serious health problems. Children and pregnant women urgently need medical and food assistance. In particular, the population of Turkana, a region located in northern Kenya, has levels of malnutrition of the 30% and the forecast is that the situation will worsen due to the lack of rainfall. Aztivate has been working in the region for two years, fighting child malnutrition. Uvinum community will have the opportunity to do the same now.

Moreover, 9 out of every 100 new cases of leprosy detected are boys and girls. And this figure is increasing, which indicates that the transmission is still active and occurs at younger ages.

The refugee crisis goes on

The boats continue arriving to the European coasts through the Mediterranean. All the travel risks, the waves or the low temperatures are insufficient to stop all the refugees that every day trying to arrive to Europe.

The refugees arrive to European coasts exhausted, wet and frozen. They are exposed to the death but it doesn’t matter, they prefer suffer this situation before that continue living with the concern that one day a bomb may hit in their home or that a bomb may explodes near them when they are in the street.

Despite the difficulties, there is no evidence that this situation will change. From the beginning of the year, 31.500 refugees have arrived to Greece. Last year in the same period, this data was 1.700 refugees.

mediterranean_refugee

Unfortunately, when refugees arrive to Europe, their situation doesn’t improve. European countries don’t know how to manage the flow of refugees neither humanistic or logistically. For example, only 322 refugees of 160.000 (that the European countries had promised) have been relocated in the whole European territory. In addition, some countries have started to monitor the number of persons who cross the borders.

For many refugees their stay in the refugee camps had to be temporally but the truth is that their stay there is becoming to a permanent stay. Low temperatures have arrived with the winter and this fact has become in a new challenge for the refugees. The reason is that if they want to have fuel for heating, they have to pay and their savings are running out. For that reason it is difficult for refugees look a future beyond the refugee camps.

Refugee crisis: your help is very valuable

The poverty and the lack of opportunities in countries at war like Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan have caused that thousands of people don’t have any alternative to flee to other countries looking for protection and new opportunities.

From the beginning of the year 2015, more than 500.000 people have tried to arrive to Europe and almost the 75% (387.000 people until September) have arrived to Europe through the Balkans, crossing East countries, especially Greece, Macedonia and Serbia. The crisis at Syria and the instability in that region suggest that the number of newcomers will continue increasing.

Refugees arrive to Europe exhausted, thirsty, and hungry. Many times they also need urgent medical attention because of they often sleep outdoors and they don’t have resources to endure the winter. The 25% of the refugees that arrive in these situations are kids.

Oxfam has worked for years in Syria, Jordan and Lebanon, among other countries, to provide drinking water and help to people that have lost everything. In this context, Oxfam Intermon has decided to begin a humanitarian response program in Serbia to help thousands of people that flee looking for protection.

refugee-crisis

With the donations made by Uvinum customers, 154 refugee families will receive hygiene kits and blankets to cope with the cold weather. In addition, these families will receive information and legal support to advise the refugees about the social laws and the risk they may find in their travel, for example mafias or human traffickers.

Preservation of the last mature forests of the Mediterranean

The last April we informed you about a new project of Uvinum and Acció Natura that had the aim to preserve the last existing mature forests in Spain.

According to Compensa Natura, a mature forest is a forest with none or very little human intervention, which has evolved naturally over decades, or even centuries, until it has developed into a unique and singular indicator of what nature is able to generate in a specific ecosystem. The preservation of mature forest is key to protect biodiversity, especially to protect many animals that are endangered.

For more than 20 months, Acció Natura is collaborating with the “Selvans Program” to preserve the last mature forests remaining in Spain. With this project Alma Natura wants to help to preserve the last existing mature forests in Spain through its purchase or through the purchase of its stumpage trees to 25 years in order to avoid that forest and trees which are centennials with a unique and irreplaceable habitat for their countless species of flora and fauna.

Every year, the world lose 20,000 hectares of forest and, with them, their capacity to house an extraordinary biodiversity, mitigate climate change, cover the water cycle and maintain the ecological process. For this reason, Uvinum didn’t hesitate and decided to collaborate with Accio Natura to preserve the last mature forests through the stumpage acquisition (25 years) aimed at the possible maximum number of forests.

Mature-forests

According to a University of Girona study, mature trees emit substances to the air that are beneficial to our health. Thanks to the solidarity of the customers of Uvinum, 7,895m2 of mature forest will be preserved and, at the same time, the biodiversity of the area will remain intact and we will continue to benefit from the substances emitted by the trees there are in the mature forests.

Preservation of old growth forest in the Mediterranean region

From April, Uvinum’s customers have the possibility to add in their purchases one solidary euro to help to protect old growth forest in the Mediterranean region.

After 4 month from the beginning of the project, we show you an infographic about the current project status. In conclusion, we can say that, until now, 695 customers have made a donation and we have raised 46% of the project.

Preservation of old growth forest in the Mediterranean region

According to Compensa Natura, an old growth forest is a forest with none or very little human intervention, which has evolved naturally over decades, or even centuries, until it has developed into a unique and singular indicator of what nature is able to generate in a specific ecosystem. The preservation of old growth forest is key to protect biodiversity, especially to protect many animals that are endangered.

For example, in Catalonia, there are less than 207 old growth forest, which represent only a 0,17% of its wooded area. For that, Acció Natura, in collaboration with “Selvans Program”, have the aim to preserve the last remaining old growth forest in Spain.

With your help 7.895m2 of old growth forest will be preserved and, at the same time, the biodiversity of the area will remain intact. Another reason to protect the old growth forest is that, according to a University of Girona study, the old trees emit substances to the air that are beneficial to our health.

Don’t hesitate, go to the Uvinum website, choose between all the wine, beers, distillates, wine accessories and gourmet products that they offer and, before finish your purchase, add a solidary euro to preserve the few old growth forest that are in Spain.
