Adopt a whale

Argentinien

Scientific investigation of the natural world allows us to unravel biological processes, describe the relationships between living things and their habitat, and understand the conservation needs of species. Today, the world's cetaceans live in a changing ocean that challenges their future and well-being.

Beschreibung

Whales are biologically special and contribute to mitigating the negative impacts of climate change. Therefore, the conservation and restoration of the great whale populations has a direct implication in the protection of marine ecosystems from threats such as CO2 emissions and global climate change.

The Instuto de Conservación de Ballenas (ICB) develops a long-term scientific program directed that consists of monitoring the population of the southern right whale, Eubalaena australis, from Patagonia Argentina, and has great value and relevance for the knowledge of the natural heritage from the country. The species, of high importance in marine ecosystems, is also a tourist resource for Chubut.

The continuity of data collection will make it possible to detect problems that affect this population, draw up strategies for their prevention and control for the protection of the species and its habitat in the South Atlantic, and carry out new environmental education and scientific dissemination activities.

Aktivitäten

  • Carry out aerial photo-identification surveys of the right whales of Peninsula Valdés to monitor the population dynamics and their geographical distribution.
  • Monitor the frequency of kelp gull attacks on whales by observing from cliffs.
  • Make observations from cliffs in different parts of the Valdés Peninsula on the behavior, use of habitat and the respiratory rate of mothers and young to evaluate their physical condition.
  • Take photographs, videos and geographic location of the whales from cliffs, drones and boats to identify individuals, determine the sex of the whales and evaluate their body condition.

Wer wird begünstigt?

The conservation of the Southern Right Whale and its environment. The funds received allow the continuity of scientific research projects to monitor changes in the health status of its population, detect threats and find solutions to the problems they face in the oceans.

Projektziele

The conservation of whales and the oceans.
