A weather system that produced heavy rains flooded parts of Malawi in mid-March 2019, before developing into Cyclone Idai which struck Mozambique and Zimbabwe on 14-16 March, 2019.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams work to access the affected people and send them medical supplies and assistance with water, food and sanitation. They are also helping with medical surveillance and referral systems to community clinics and evacuation centers.

The numbers of affected people are increasing and there are still numerous populations completely isolated. MSF works quickly to assist the survivors. Primary care is being provided in Beira transit centers where people rescued from trees, roofs and small tracts of unflooded land are received through MSF mobile clinics.

So far, no serious medical needs have been detected, but the teams in the field are very concerned about the possible outbreaks of diarrheal diseases caused by the consumption of contaminated water, and the large number of people who require medication and urgent treatment for chronic diseases. , such as HIV and tuberculosis.

  • Providing medical consultations via mobile clinics in several neighbourhoods, including going door-to-door.
  • Responding to health needs including treating trauma injuries, refilling antiretroviral treatment for people living with HIV, and providing medication for people with chronic diseases.
  • Visiting communities to clean and repair boreholes plus test the water quality to ensure access to clean water.
  • Building basic latrines, showers and shelters.
  • Distributing non-food items and hygiene kits; and educating communities on hygiene and safe water practices.
