According to a 2017 update from the Joint Monitoring Program, 56% of rural India has access to safely managed water services while only 39% have access to safely managed sanitation. The national government of India is strongly committed to and investing in improvements in both areas. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, India is shifting from hand pumps to piped water connections and has committed to realizing piped water for rural households by 2024. The Swachh Bharat Mission, a nationwide sanitation campaign that translates to “Clean India Mission,” has enabled India to experience an increase in the population’s uptake of sanitation.
Aligned with SDG 6 and building on Government of India’s key programs – Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevan Mission – Water For People India through its Everyone Forever strategy is continuing to support communities in establishing safe, sustainable, and well-managed water and sanitation facilities throughout the 2020 program year and beyond.
Water for People India has already reached over 1 million people with safe and reliable water and sanitation services. In 2020, it is planned an expansion of water systems, sanitation, and hygiene efforts covers up to 10 blocks, with three blocks in South 24 Parganas, including Namkhana, five blocks in Sheohar, and Chikhaldara, Maharashtra and Rajnagar, West Bengal. In 2020, market-led approaches to improving sanitation are also a significant programming priority.
- Install hand pumps in communities, schools, and health centers coupled with an effective operation and maintenance (O&M) system.
- Promote upgrades to toilets and treatment and reuse of fecal sludge.
- Establish Water User Committees to collect tariffs for operations and maintenance costs and will develop Village Water Safety and Security Plans to protect water sources, institutionalize water supply assessments, and ensure regular monitoring.
