Balearic Islands Beach cleaning with young people

Today, plastic represents 95 per cent of the waste floating in the Mediterranean and lying on its beaches.

Large plastic pieces injure, suffocate and often kill marine animals, including protected and endangered species, such as sea turtles and monk seals. But it is microplastics – smaller and more insidious fragments – that have reached record levels of concentration of 1.25 million fragments per km2 in the Mediterranean Sea, almost four times higher than in the “plastic island” found in the North Pacific Ocean.

Save the Med through the Beach clean Up Programme explores the issue of plastic in the marine environment and the effect this has on our marine life and ourselves. It is offered with the aim of as many people as possible with marine conservation, ultimately helping to shape an environmentally caring and proactive local population and future generation.

During the beach clean-ups we look at the impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems, the connectivity between human behaviour and the marine environment, and our responsibility for it. It is a hands-on programme during which the volunteers do a local excursion and conduct a beach clean up. They undertake a scientific survey, analyse their results and discuss solutions to local problems.

The programme raises awareness and promotes reflection on how we can replace or re-use plastic to limit its demand in our everyday life, as well as how we can prevent plastic from ending up in the environment. It inspires and empowers students to find innovative solutions to common problems caused by plastic pollution.

  • Collect plastics from the coasts.
  • Collect data of plastic pollution on beaches.
  • Analyze the impact of plastic pollution.
  • Promote projects to reduce the use of plastic.
  • Carry out awareness-raising actions on improving waste management and preventing waste in the environment.
  • Collect marine litter during expeditions.

Wer wird begünstigt?

Between 60 and 200 people participate in each beach clean-up action, collecting around 3,000 -12,000 plastic objects.

Reduce plastic pollution of beaches and protect ecosystems and species that are in danger, allowing the regeneration of marine biodiversity.
