On Sunday afternoon of June 3rd, the Fuego volcano exploded unexpectedly in southern Guatemala, producing ash columns up to 10,000 meters above sea level, descent of constant pyroclastic flows, descent of strong lahars and clouds burning with temperatures up to 700 degrees Celsius that covered more than 260 kilometers around, affecting several communities near this volcanic dome.
The volcano is still active, so the work of the rescuers is proving very complicated.
The accounting of affected people after the Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis -EDAN-, until June 6, add up to 99 more deaths, about 1,700,000 affected and more than 3 million evacuees from the most damaged communities . The number of missing persons remains uncertain, so the number of victims can increase significantly. The departments of Sacatepéquez, Escuintla and Chimaltenango were declared in the State of Calamity.
Currently, two schools in the community of Alotenango in Antigua Guatemala, in which Fundación Telefónica intervenes, are being used as shelters.
The donated funds will cover a series of urgent needs:
- Blankets, sheets and pillows.
- Adult diapers
- Feminine towels
- Toys or something to entertain the children.
- Medicines for respiratory tract
- Ointments for blows and burners
- Vitamins for children and the elderly
- Trash bags
- Disposable plates, glasses and cutlery
- Relaxing medications such as Pasinerva or linden tea
The volunteers of Telefónica are making an economic collection among the employees of the Telefónica Group to purchase primary needs products, classificate and deliver donations for the victims.
Who will benefit?
In the short term we will help more than 1,000 people who are in the shelter school. In the medium term we will support the communities that have disappeared to allow schools resume its activities, in particular the Official Rural Mixed School (EORM) Ceylán with 403 preprimary and primary children of the Ceylán Agrarian community and the Chuchu community, and the EORM school with 200 students. We will also collaborate with the schools of the most affected communities El Rodeo and San Miguel los Lotes, which disappeared.
Give immediate support to the shelters of the mentioned Alotenango schools, which are hosting more than 1,000 people (adults, adults and children). Later we will rebuild schools in the affected areas.
