Breast cancer and sportSpain
Each year more than 32,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in Spain. Although the maximum incidence of this disease is between 45 and 50 years, an increase in the number of breast cancer cases among younger women is being observed. Today, breast cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer death in the Spanish female population, with more than 6,000 deaths a year.
Thanks to research, today 8 out of 10 women overcome breast cancer 5 years after their diagnosis.

There is evidence of the importance that good life habits, including the practice of physical exercise, have an impact on the prevention of breast cancer. When it is suffered, the benefits are known at the level of the improvement of the quality of life, the tolerance to the treatment and the reduction of its side effects; and also seems to reduce the risk of recurrence.
The GEICAM Breast Cancer Research Group is developing an innovative line of work in Oncological Physical Exercise, understanding this as “the exercise prescribed and controlled by a professional, which is performed to reduce or prevent the side effects of cancer treatments in a way individualized, and that, due to its overall effects on the organism, improve the health, quality of life and survival of patients. ” For this, three levels are being carried out: research, training and dissemination.
- Investigate the clinical and molecular benefits of physical exercise in patients with breast cancer.
- Train professionals to offer and monitor individualized exercise programs for breast cancer patients. As well as training health professionals about the existing evidence about the benefits of their patients following exercise programs.
- Inform the benefits of healthy lifestyle habits in the prevention of cancer to patients and society, and provide specific guidance to patients to start or continue physical exercise during or after treatment (type of exercise, intensity ...) and the advantages in its treatment to avoid relapses and improve their quality of life.
To improve the quality of life of patients, increase their survival and decrease the incidence of breast cancer in our society.
