Senegal is one of the most stable West African countries where the survival of children has improved in recent years, but education remains the main concern.
Save the Children will initiate a program with the objective of contributing to the access and inclusive education of girls in a situation of greater vulnerability. To this end, it has developed an intervention adapted to the reality of the Fatick region that will consist of friendly, safe and quality learning environments for girls, promotion of gender-sensitive teaching practices and improvement of teachers' abilities, including a favorable change in the attitude of teachers, families and communities towards girls' education.
Often, Senegalese girls are forced to leave primary school at an early age to start working as domestic servants and contribute to household income. Less than one in five girls can go to high school, while among adults there are only six literate women for every 10 literate men.
- Transform educational spaces into safe schools that facilitate the integral development of girls.
- Improve girls' learning outcomes thanks to academic support with better equipment and more trained teachers.
- Improve school equipment (kitchen, bathrooms) as well as train girls, teachers and families about good hygiene habits.
Who will benefit?
This project is aimed at 60 girls between 3 and 10 years old from a Fatick primary school in Senegal. The school was chosen because of its extreme vulnerability, in an environment of poverty and lack of educational resources. In addition, about 20 teachers and students' families will participate in the project to involve the entire community in the education of girls.
Promote the education of girls in the Fatick region (Senegal), in which 40% of girls are not in school.
