Currently, 120,000 children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition in Mauritania as a result of the food crisis in the country due to the recurrent droughts of recent years.
In 2018 the challenges multiply. After an extremely poor agricultural campaign with a large rainfall deficit, the nutritional situation is expected to worsen and the number of cases of severe malnutrition to increase significantly, reaching 165,000 children and pregnant and lactating women in need of treatment.
Save the Children works to increase the resilience of these communities to the new waves of drought, livestock death and lack of crops. They identify the most vulnerable families and provide them with all the necessary resources to stop malnutrition and diseases.
- Identification of the most vulnerable families in the region of Brakna (Mauritania).
- Distribution of seeds to 210 households that have lost their harvests due to drought, providing them with the necessary resources to cope with drought and lack of food.
252 households that have lost their harvests due to the drought will receive seeds so they can plant in the following season. In this way, they will have the necessary resources to face the drought and the lack of food.
Provide the necessary resources to families so that they can have their food and health needs met, thus preventing malnutrition and other diseases.
