An earthquake with magnitude of 7.4 RS, has shaken the territory of Palu and Donggala, Central Sulawesi on Friday 28th of September.
The tsunami and earthquake has caused casualties. The national disaster management agency (BNPB) reported, as of 30 September, that the number of casualties has reached 1763 persons; 2632 are injured and 5,000 missing. It is estimated that the number will continue to increase as it is believed that many people are still buried under collapsed buildings. There are widespread power blackouts reported in Palu and Donggala which is affecting the capacity of hospitals to treat injured. Communication is also affected and caused difficulties for coordination and reporting with the region.
With search and rescue efforts still under way, the full extent of the damage is still emerging, but the number of fatalities is expected to rise in the coming days. The situation for tens of thousands of children will remain extremely precarious in the days ahead. UNICEF is working with the Government to get help and lifesaving supplies to affected children and families.
To support infant and young child feeding, assist breastfeeding mothers, and assess the ongoing needs of the survivors.
To provide support in tracing the families of children who have been separated from their parents.
